fraction subtraction/addition
then fractions to percentages
then generalising...

same statements as above, this time with percentages
two generalisations
maybe explored by substitution

fraction sequences

starts by counting on
fraction sequences with their 'simplest' (cancelled) form on the powerpoint
this could be done orally, with some explanations sought

then finding three missing terms and a general rule (nth term) for a fraction sequence
with (assumed) regular increases on the first resource
and a regular pattern (nth term) for the numerators and the denominators on the second resource

students might need nudging to consider equivalent fractions - hopefully not...

half is in the middle

what do students notice about the results?

why is that?

subtracting fractions

sometimes it is good to present tasks without talking too much
so that students sort out their own understanding

you could show these particular subtractions and ask students to discuss and try to work out
(a) what the question is and
(b) what is going on to obtain a solution

fraction subtraction

more fraction subtraction tasks than anyone probably ever wants

some with patterns that continue
that can be generalised
and possibly proved

fraction sequence

what is the nth term of this fraction sequence, which continues with a regular pattern?

unusual cone volumes

how much bigger is an elliptical cone than a parabolic cone?

d is the diameter of the circle
h is the height of the cone

take to times

work out these fraction subtractions

then replace the subtraction sign with a multiplication sign
and work these out

try to find some other examples, to find patterns that fit a rule

try to prove any general rules

there are some other generalities with the same property
check that this one does:

prove that the subtraction (family) above has the same result with a subtraction as it does with a multiplication

and this one:
