nth term and equations

for Ashling, in Edinburgh

a ppt is here

at a session (with fine cake), many thanks to John Mason and Anne Watson we discussed approaches to teaching linear equations

we thought it could be helpful to link an nth term rule to solving an equation
to find the value of 'n' that has a given number of sticks in the sequence
i.e. given what the nth term value is, find the sequence rule and use this to work out what number term in the sequence this value is

with an intention of linking diagrams to solution steps
and seeing how this relates to solving an equation

for these you take some sticks away first to obtain the 'bunches'

for these you add some sticks first to obtain the 'bunches'
