generalising GCSE questions (5)

a question from Edexcel asks students to work out the area of a compound shape

this isn't quite the same question but it is more interesting if the three given lengths are consecutive odd numbers ('put a pattern in and you'll get a pattern out' David Wells)

students could try several examples
possibly being systematic (from the outset or later)

they might notice that the values for the areas are all multiples of 8
