generalising GCSE questions (2)

an OCR question gives two inputs and two corresponding outputs and asks students to determine the two operations involved in this two-step function machine:

students are likely to solve this by considering 'steps'

as well as a method involving setting up simultaneous equations, the operations can be determined by considering just one of the input, output pairs and creating the generality of the possible operation pairs:

and then solving an equation, formed from the second input, output pair
